Most business owners think growth is supposed to feel smooth. Like a steady climb upward.

But if you’ve actually been through it, you know the truth - growth often feels like things are breaking.

And that’s not a problem. It’s a signal.

Why Growth Feels Broken

There comes a point in every business where what used to work… just doesn’t anymore.

The systems that got you here start to fail. The team structure feels strained. The way you’ve been operating suddenly feels inefficient or unsustainable.

This isn’t because you’re doing something wrong. It’s because you’ve outgrown the version of your business that got you to this point.

Growth doesn’t just require more effort - it requires a different approach entirely.

The Rule of Threes Explained

There’s a concept often referred to as the “Rule of Threes” in business growth.

At certain stages, your business will naturally hit a breaking point. Not just in one area, but across everything - your systems, your people, your leadership, and your marketing strategy.

What got you to $1 million in revenue often won’t get you to $3 million. And what got you to $3 million won’t get you to $9 million.

Each stage requires a new level of thinking, structure, and execution.

What Changes at Each Stage

Getting to $1M - The Hustle Phase
At this stage, you can grind your way through. It’s you and a small team, relying on hard work, long hours, and doing whatever it takes to get jobs done.

$1M to $3M - The Delegation Shift
This is where things start to break if you don’t adapt. You can’t oversee everything anymore. You need to hire real management, delegate responsibility, and start building documented processes.

$3M to $9M - The Systems Phase
Now you’re managing managers. You need scalable systems, stronger leadership, and more structure across the business. This is where many companies either level up - or stall out.

$9M+ - The Transformation Stage
Growth at this level often requires a complete shift in culture and structure. What worked before has to be rebuilt to support the size and complexity of the business.

What To Do When You Hit a Wall

If your business feels like it’s breaking right now, don’t panic.

That pressure you’re feeling is usually a sign that you’re ready for the next stage of growth.

But getting there requires change.

It means building systems instead of relying on memory. Hiring people you trust instead of trying to do everything yourself. Investing in tools, processes, and leadership that can scale with the business.

It’s uncomfortable. It’s expensive. And it’s absolutely necessary.

The reality is simple:

You can’t build a $10 million company with a $1 million mindset.

At some point, you have to stop working in the truck - and start working on the business.
